เรียนภาษาอังกฤษกับ สำนวน (Idiom)

                ก่อนอื่นมาดูก่อนว่า Idiom คืออะไร แล้วทำไมเราถึงจะต้องเรียนรู้มันด้วย เอาละ Idiom คือ สำนวน ซึ่งหมายถึง คำหรือศัพท์ที่ไม่ได้มีความหมายตรงตัวของมันนั่นเองแหละคะ เช่นถ้าของไทยก็อย่าง “ได้ทีขี่แพะไล่” ซึ่งความหมายจริงๆ เราไม่ได้ไปขี่แพะไล่ใคร ทีนี้สำนวนในภาษาอังกฤษมีมากมายหลายประโยคอยู่ ทั้งที่คุ้นหูเพราะใช้กันเยอะ และทั้งที่ไม่คุ้นหู ใช้กันเยอะ แต่ในชีวิตเราไม่เคยได้ยิน อิอิ

               แล้วทำไมเราต้องเรียนความหมายมันด้วยละ เอ่อ นั้นนะซิคะ งั้นแค่นี้นะ !! ไม่ช่าย เราต้องรู้ความหมายมันซิคะ ไม่งั้นเราก็จะคุยหรือแหลงกะฝรั่งไม่รู้เรื่อง อย่างเช่น so far แปลแบบไม่รู้เรื่องว่ามันคือ Idiom ก็กลายเป็นว่า ไกลมาก 555 go so big กันเลยละคะ (go so big เป็นสำนวนที่คนไทยคุยกันเล่นๆนะค่ะ ไม่ใช่ของฝรั่งนะคะ ถ้าฝรั่ง ไปกันใหญ่ = Out of hand) เพราะจริงๆแล้ว so far เป็น Idiom นะค่ะ แปลได้ดังนี้

 1. Up to the present moment จนถึงทุกวันนี้ จนกระทั่งปัจจุบัน, จนเดี๋ยวนี้

 2. To a limited extent เพียงแค่นี้, เพียงเท่านี้

  • in current fashion; being a current fad; very fashionable or stylish. เป็นที่นิยมในปัจจุบัน

  • kids are like their parents. เชื้อไม่ทิ้งแถว , ลูกไม้หล่นไม่ไกลต้น ความหมายเหมือนกับ like father, like son

  • a sudden change of a belief or plan to the opposite of what it was before. การกลับหน้ามือเป็นหลังมือ

• a white lie
  • a lie that you tell in order not to upset someone. การโกหกที่บอกไปเพื่อไม่ให้ผู้ฟังต้องเสียใจ หรืออารมณ์เสีย

  • to a great degree. มากมาย

  • a phrase indicating that the speaker is adding information. ใช้เมื่อผู้พูดต้องการจะบอกข้อมูลเพิ่มเติม

  • to call something by its right name; to speak frankly about something, even if it is unpleasant. พูดเปิดอก

  • if someone can’t see the wood for the trees, they are unable to understand what is important in a situation because they are giving too much attention to details. เอาแต่สนใจกับรายละเอียดปลีกย่อยมากเกินไปจนมองไม่เห็นจุดสำคัญของเหตุการณ์

  • to attract someone’s attention. ดึงดูดความสนใจของใครบางคน

  • seen doing something illegal or private. ถูกจับได้คาหนังคาเขา = caught red-handed

• chew the fat | chew the rag
  • to chat or gossip. พูดคุย หรือ ซุบซิบ นินทา

• cost the earth | charge the earth
  • to be very expensive. แพงมาก

• Cut (one’s) teeth on
  • To learn or do as a beginner or at the start of one’s career. เรียนรู้หรือทำบางสิ่งเมื่ออายุน้อยมาก

• damned if you do and damned if you don’t
  • No matter what you do, it will cause trouble. ไม่ว่าคุณจะทำอะไร ก็มีปัญหาอยู่ดี

• dead to the world
  • sound asleep. หลับสนิท, หลับลึก
  • intoxicated. เมามายมาก

• Don’t hold your breath.
  • Do not stop breathing waiting for something to happen that won’t happen. ไม่มีทางเป็นไปได้, ฝันไปเถอะ

• drop a bombshell
  • to suddenly tell someone a piece of news that upsets them very much. ประกาศข่าวที่น่าตื่นตะลึง, ทำให้แตกตื่น

• eat humble pie
  • to act very humble when one is shown to be wrong. นอบน้อมมาก

• for better or (for) worse
  • this could be good or bad. ไม่ว่าจะเกิดอะไรก็ตาม

• from time to time
  • occasionally (but not very often). บางครั้งบางคราว

• give the green light
  • to give permission for someone to do something or for something to happen (often + to do sth). อนุญาตให้ใครทำอะไรได้ตามที่ต้องการ

• go down a treat
  • if something goes down a treat, people enjoy it very much. สิ่งที่ทำให้มีความสุข

• hard to swallow
  • if something that someone says is hard to swallow, it is difficult to believe. ยากที่จะเชื่อ

• have a heart-to-heart (talk)
  • to have a sincere and intimate talk. พูดคุยเปิดเผยและเป็นกันเอง

• have egg on one’s face
  • to be embarrassed by something one has done. ขายขี้หน้า, เสียหน้า

• have your ear to the ground also keep your ear to the ground
  • to watch and listen carefully to what is happening around you. ดูและฟังอย่างละเอียดถี่ถ้วนว่าเกิดอะไรขึ้นรอบๆตัวคุณ

• Hit the books
  • To study, especially with concentrated effort. ไปเรียน (แบบขยันเรียน)

• hit the road
  • to depart; to begin one’s journey, especially on a road trip; to leave for home. ออกเดินทาง

• hit the roof / go through the roof
  • to suddenly become very angry. โกรธมาก, hit the ceiling. ราคาพุ่งขึ้นอย่างทันที

• hit town
  • to arrive in town. เข้ามาในเมือง

• Hold one’s breath
  • to wait or delay until something special happens. (Usually in the negative.) – รอหรือชะลอไป จนกว่าสิ่งที่พิเศษจะเกิดขึ้น (มักใช้ในแง่ลบ)

• hold/stand your ground
  • to refuse to change your opinions or behaviour, even if other people try to force you to do this. ไม่เปลี่ยนแปลงพฤติกรรมหรือความเห็น
  • to refuse to move backwards, especially when you are being attacked. ยึดมั่นอยู่ที่เดิม ไม่ถอย ตั้งรับ ตั้งมั่น รักษาสถานะไว้

• hold the fort
  • to be left in charge of a situation or place while someone is away. ดูแลสถานที่หรือกิจกรรมที่กำลังทำอยู่ดำเนินต่อไปอย่างเรียบร้อยในขณะที่อีกคนหนึ่งไม่อยู่

• hold your head high | hold your head up high
  • to show that you are not ashamed of your efforts. ภูมิใจ

• hold your own
  • to be as successful as other people or things in a situation. เก่งหรือประสบความสำเร็จเท่าๆ กับคนอืนในเรื่องนั้น

• hold your tongue
  • to say nothing or to stop speaking. เงียบ, หุบปาก

• I (can) feel it in my bones
  • something that you say when you are certain something is true or will happen, although you have no proof. ลางสังหรณ์, รู้สึกมั่นใจว่าสิ่งนั้นจะเกิดขึ้นหรือจะเป็นจริง แม้ว่ายังไม่มีหลักฐาน

• in a row
  • in a series without interruption. อย่างต่อเนื่องติดต่อกัน

• in relation to = vis-a-vis
  • relating to someone or something; in connection with someone or something. เนื่องจาก, ตามที่, เกี่ยวกับ

• in someone’s good books
  • if you are in someone’s good books, they are pleased with you. เป็นที่พึงพอใจ

• in the black
  • not in debt; in a financially profitable condition. (As opposed to in the red.) – ไม่มีหนี้สิน ตรงข้ามกับคำว่า in the red

• In the flesh
  • Alive. มีชีวิตอยู่
  • In person; present. มาด้วยตัวเอง, ตัวเป็นๆ

• in the (very) nick of time
  • just in time; at the last possible instant; just before it’s too late. ทันเวลาพอดี, ก่อนจะสายเกินไป

• in a nutshell
  • very briefly. อย่างสั้นๆมากๆ

• in the red
  • If a person or a company is in the red, their debts are greater than their assets. หนี้ท่วมหัว

• itchy feet
  • the need to leave; a feeling of a need to travel. ความต้องการที่จะเดินทางหรือท่องเที่ยว ตรงกับสำนวนของไทย คือ ชีพจรลงเท้า

• jump through hoops | go through hoops
  • to do a lot of extra things so you can have or do something you want. พยายามทำอะไรที่หนักหรือยุ่งยากมากๆ เพื่อให้ได้สิ่งที่ต้องการ

• just what the doctor ordered
  • exactly what is wanted or needed. เป็นสิ่งที่จำเป็นหรือต้องการ

K

• keep abreast of something
  • to have the most recent information about something. ติดตาม, ทำให้ทันสมัย

• keep one’s nose clean
  • to keep out of trouble, especially trouble with the law. หลีกเลี่ยงจากปัญหา โดยเฉพาะเรื่องผิดกฎหมาย

• know someone or something like the palm of one’s hand; know someone or something like the back of one’s hand; know someone or something like a book
  • to know someone or something very well. รู้จักคนนั้นๆหรือสิ่งนั้นๆเป็นอย่างดี

• know your stuff

  • to let someone do what they want without helping them or trying to control them (usually passive). ทิ้งไว้ให้ดูแลตัวเอง

  • to tell something that is a secret, often without intending to. เปิดเผยความลับ โดยไม่ตั้งใจ

  • If you say something is much ado about nothing, you think it’s an overreaction to something that shouldn’t have caused so much trouble. ตื่นเต้นโวยวายกับเรื่องไม่เป็นเรื่อง

  • exactly even, especially in a race or a contest. สูสี, หายใจรดต้นคอ

  • a neighbourhood or a district. ในละแวกบ้าน

• Never say die!

  • to prevent a small problem from getting worse by stopping it soon after it starts. ยุติได้ตั้งแต่เริ่มแรก

• off your own bat
  • if you do something off your own bat, you do it without anyone else telling you or asking you to do it. ทำด้วยตัวเอง โดยไม่ใครบอก หรือถามใคร

• on the strength of something
  • because of something that has influenced or persuaded you. เนื่องจากมีบางสิ่งบางอย่างโน้มน้าวหรือชักชวนคุณ

• out-of-date
  • Something is old and no longer useful or no longer accurate. เก่าและไม่สามารถใช้ประโยชน์ได้, ไม่ถูกต้อง

• Out of hand
  • Out of control ไปกันใหญ่, ไม่สามารถควบคุมได้

• over the top
  • too extreme. มากเกินไป

• paint the town red
  • to go out and enjoy yourself in the evening, often drinking a lot of alcohol and dancing. ออกไปเที่ยวฉลองให้สุดเหวี่ยง ดื่มเต้นอย่างสุดๆ

  • to do everything you can to make something successful. พยายามทำทุกอย่างเพื่อให้บางอย่างเกิดผลสำเร็จ

• Put a sock in it!
  • an impolite way of telling someone to be quiet. บอกคนที่ส่งเสียงดังให้เงียบ (แบบไม่สุภาพ)

  • to do or say something that causes problems, especially if you try to change a situation which most people do not want to change – พูดหรือทำอะไรออกไปแล้วทำให้เหตุการณ์นั้นๆแย่ลง ตรงกับสำนวนไทยที่ว่า ชักใบให้เรือเสีย

  • to suddenly lose the energy or interest to continue doing what you are doing. เลิกสนใจ, ไม่พยายามต่อ

  • to talk a lot. พูดมาก

  • Safe and without injury or damage ปลอดภัยดี ไม่มีอันตราย

• Serve someone right
  • Be someone’s deserved punishment or misfortune สมน้ำหน้า, สมควรแล้ว

  • if someone or something is a sight for sore eyes, you feel happy to see them. สิ่งที่ยินดีที่ได้เห็น

• smart mouth someone
  • who makes wisecracks; a cocky person who speaks out of turn. คนปากดี อวดเก่ง

• steer clear of something/somebody
  • to avoid something or someone because they are dangerous or bad for you. หลีกเลี่ยง บางคนหรือบางสิ่ง เพราะจะก่อให้เกิดอันตรายกับคุณ หรือทำให้คุณแย่

• stick out like a sore thumb | stand out like a sore thumb
  • to be easily noticed as different. แตกต่างอย่างเห็นได้ชัดเจน

• take somebody for granted
  • to fail to appreciate someone, usually said about someone who is not appreciated because you think they will always be available ไม่เห็นค่าของคนๆนั้น เห็นเป็นของตาย ไม่เห็นความสำคัญ

• take something for granted
  • to fail to appreciate the value of something ไม่เห็นคุณค่าของสิ่งนั้น เห็นเป็นของตาย ไม่เห็นความสำคัญ
  • to accept something as true without questioning or testing it เชื่อว่าสิ่งนั้นเป็นจริง โดยไม่พิสูจน์

• take the bull by the horns
  • to forcefully attack a difficult situation. เผชิญกับสิ่งท้าทาย

• teething problems | teething troubles
  • difficulties and problems experienced in the early stages of a project, activity, etc. ปัญหาในระยะแรกของการเริ่มทำสิ่งหนึ่งสิ่งใด

• ten feet tall
  • feeling really, really good. รู้สึกดีมากๆ

• To take a rain check (v)
  • to politely refuse an offer, with the possibility that you may accept in the future. ปฏิเสธข้อเสนออย่างสุภาพ แต่อนาคตก็เป็นไปได้ที่จะรับ

• up a gum tree
  • to be in a very difficult situation. อยู่ในสถานการณ์ที่ยากลำบากมาก

V

• vis-a-vis = in relation to
  • relating to someone or something; in connection with someone or something. เนื่องจาก, ตามที่, เกี่ยวกับ

• vote with your feet
  • to show that you do not support something, especially an organization or a product, by not using or not buying it any more. แสดงออกว่าคุณไม่สนับสนุนหรือไม่พอใจในบางสิ่งบางอย่าง โดยเฉพาะกับองค์กรหรือสินค้า โดยการไม่ใช้หรือซื้ออีกต่อไป

• warts and all
  • If you show something warts and all, you show it exactly as it is without trying to hide any of its faults or weaknesses. แสดงเปิดเผยโดยไม่ปิดบังข้อเสีย

  • to survive a dangerous event or deal with a difficult situation. เผชิญภัยอันตราย, ฝ่าวิกฤติ

  • Something that will never ever happen. ไม่มีทางเป็นไปได้

• year in, year out
  • every year for a long time. ทุกปีติดต่อกันมานาน

• You can’t judge a book by its cover.
  • something that you say which means you cannot judge the quality or character of someone or something just by looking at them. อย่าตัดสินใครหรืออะไรโดยผิวเผิน

• young blood
  • young people in an organization who will provide new ideas and energy. คุณหนุ่มสาวในองค์กร ที่มีไฟแรง ความคิดสร้างสรรค์ใหม่ๆ

• You’re telling me!
  • something that you say to emphasize that you agree with something someone has just complained about because you have experienced it yourself. เห็นด้วยกับสิ่งที่อีกฝ่ายพูดเป็นอย่างยิ่ง
